Welcome New Bridge Students

Our class blog, http://pamandddolly.blogspot.com/, is a collaborative space where you will discuss and exchange ideas with your instructors and peers. Rather than being the sole author of a collection of writing, the blog will be a group effort allowing each student to write original ideas and responses to classmate comments. The goal of this blog is to provide a space in which we can reflect and evolve ideas each individual contributes.

Each day two to three students will design a question to pose for the class (you will pick your own dates based on the syllabus). The next class day we will spend 45 minutes responding to those questions. Please make an effort to write thoughful and reflective responses and spend the entire 45 minutes writing. Always try to explore the ideas behind the question rather than try to find the right answer.

This class has control over this blog, which means in the end the result and what you learn or don't learn from it rests on your shoulders. With this is mind, we encourage you to be creative and thoughtful. But be mindful of its relevance to the questions and repsonses; we do not need post after post of political rants or break up stories. Please remember to always remain repsectful, to be open to new ideas, and to use your words to clearly explain your point rather than using bold, upper case letters and exaggerated profanity.

Finally, you are encouraged to use quotes from the books, to use your own experiences, to share what you have discussed at salons, museum visits, and lectures. This is our space to reflect on and openly explore themes from Bridge as they relate to our lives and the world around us. We will use this space to question, share our inquiries and insights, and post our most sincere thoughts about the reading and as we progress through the next four weeks together.

Cultures and viewpoints

We all have an outsiders perspective about certain cultures that we do not actively participate in. In True Notebooks the inmates have an insiders perspective about jail culture and in Persepolis Marjane has an insiders perspective of being a woman during the 1980s in Iran. How does their inside perspective change our views as outsider spectators? Why is insider information important to share with outsiders?

  1. It's very important to recieve an insiders perspective versus an outsiders perspective on anything. Outsiders perspectives only give you exactly as it is stated which is out side information. Outsiders only recieve from what is publicly given to them or what is based upon thier personal views and beliefs of such things. With insiders you get the full story. By insiders of the advantage and disadvantage of living in the moment, they can tell you exactly what is going on. You get an inside look at everything that is happening around them.

  2. Persepolis changes my perspective because all the information that i knew about Iran was was i saw through the media. Which made the whole middle east seem like a huge warzone. Which is really the wrong idea. Its good that Marjane Satrapi made this book because it gives reader a real inside look of Iran, and it shows that the people of Iran are very similiar to Americans like us. If i had not read this book i would probally have a whole different perspective about Iran.

  3. How does inside perspective change out views?Humm..well as in the book True Notebooks, they give us information anout how the inmates feel and how they changed their ways while they were in there. Their perspective give us alot of information to see or feel what they feel. It gives us a better understanding about them. On, the other hand its good to know what information the insider have. Like we can't judge them just because they're in jail for making a mistake; they are just like us. We all make mistakes but it doesn't make us who we are, it just makes us human.

  4. Not many people like Mark(True Stories) give up there time to go help others like teenagers in prison. Mark is a very good guy and I just hope he writes another book so i can read, it makes me want to help others way more then before.

  5. Getting information from someone who has a first hand outlook on things is better than passing an unwise judgement. It's like looking at a book and guessing what the stories about. Making an effort of getting inside information will reveal the truth, nothings what it seems. Most stories you hear from people they probably heard from an unreliable resource. In True Notebooks the inmates know they made a mistake and from their backround they weren't evil kids acting as animals. Either they had no family environment or the family environment they had deteriorated. You can't know the subject unless you understand it as a whole.

  6. Because, for the simple fact you cant judge a book by its cover. You have to have some sort of one on one connection with the the person themself to understand how they feel or what they must be going through.Their inside perspective changed my outside perspective because it kind of gave me an insight of the things that they felt that I never once thought to think about, for example, in true notebooks, the character Wu, states that "he knows he's not important and people don't think or care about him, because when he was out, he never thought about people in jail", which made me understand hoe he must feel, because I've never been to jail, so I don't know how it feels, so no I rarely think of someone in jail.

  7. IT CHANGES OUR VIEWS BECAUSE WE DO NOT ACTUALLY KNOW WHATS GOING ON, WE ONLY KNOW THE THINGS THAT WE ARE TOLD OR THE THINGS THAT WE READ ABOUT, WE DO NOT ACTUALLY KNOW WHATS GOING ON BECAUSE WE ARE NOT THERE. THINGS ON THE INSIDE COULD BE ALOT BETTER OR ALOT WORST, BUT WE WILL NEVER KNOW. INSIDER INFORMATION IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT SHOULD BE TAKEN IN AS A LESSON, AS IF WITH THE JAIL CULTURE, IT SHOULD SEND YOU A MESSAGE TELLING YOU REASONS TO NOT WANT TO BE INVOLVED WITH GANG LIFE OR ANY OTHER CRIMES, OR WITH PERSEPOLIS, I DO NOT REALLY KNOW MUCH ABOUT THIS STORY ,BUT WE SHOUDLD BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT WE HAVE.

  8. Because an outsiders perspective is based on what they heard and what they've seen. Therefore they don't know the truth. An insider's perspective will is important because an insider can tell an outsider what's really going on. The information will be helpful because it will increase the outsider's knowledge. The outsider won't be able to judge the insider based on where they live or where they are. The inmates in True Notebook is showing the author that they are not evil people just because of they place where they are. They share with him what goes on and how they feel. In conclusion insiders' perspective can change outsiders' perspective by showing them what it's really like and what really goes on.

  9. Well personally I thought that everybody was heavyily religous and that the veils were a relgion thing i never knew that girls were forced to wear veils by the goverment and that women's hair was veiwed as a sexually stimulating cause to me that seems like just a very outlandish thing women's hair makes a guy lose control but these veiwpoints are important for the very fact is I didn't know any of this and probably never would have if it wasn't for her telling it to me through her eyes and making it relatable these helped change my veiw about all the Iranian people that their not all for war that most of what they do is forced upon them you only see what our goverment shows which is "They have weapons of mass destruction" or "They are a threat to our freedom" and From Marjane's veiw its a whole other world to me that i had never known of. its important beause to change the veiw of a few can grow to many and then we don't have people that are ignorant to whats going on. It also changes are outsider veiw to become an insider like them.

  10. The book showed that kids of Iran had the same humor as American kids, by the way they joked around with the veils, and just they way they played together period. I think their should be a inside perspective for everyones country city or town gave to outsiders, because assumtions are not always as accurate as what people actually know about places. Assuming can only get you so far.

  11. I think the book true notebooks explains the insiders perspective very well, the inmates basically express how they felt about being in jail and what it was really like in the delinquent center.the inmates perspective changes the view of the outsdie viewers the inmates way of thinking was completly diffrent and made me want to know more because being locked up thats somthing know one would know about unless the experiencd it.

  12. Marjane is a very smart girl who pays attention to her surroundings. Not only was she a young girl at the time but she understood "most" of what was going on. when i was quite younger i did believe that most men in Iran were attackers and had bombs, well the ones that looked similar to Osama, i was a kid and i didnt know, and thats how "some" kids think. I always kept that to myself and never told anyone. Insiders information is so important because it gives us a chance to really know what its like living in someone elses shoes. You should never judge someone by where they live, nor who they are friends with. Everyone is different in almost every way, and Persepolis really made me think more about it.

  13. Everyone is oblivious to things everywhere. A lot of unseen things happen all over the world and we are unaware of the evil doings that actually happen every day. Sometimes people make things look like something they are not. Our own government of instance. We only know what they want us to know and we cannot do anything about that. Gaining an insider’s point of view can completely alter your previous perception of the idea. If you are not directly experience it then you cannot say that you know exactly what is going on. The insider point of view reveals the truth in a way. What we think is the truth maybe not always be the truth. People do lie unfortunately. Gaining the insiders point of view helps people understand what is going on away from home. This world is full of lies and hiding of the truth. I wish someone had an insider’s view of the world. Then maybe we could make things better.

  15. There are certain things that we see on television that make us think we know all we need to know about a certain culture. I am reading Persepolis and it's strange to me the things I thought that I knew and the that I know from this book. There is a bad rap on Middle Eastern countries because of things that have happened in the past like for instance; September 11, 2001 with attack of the World Trade Centers of New York. Anyone that is Middle Eastern prays five times a day and is ready to commit suicide for their religion at the sound of a pin drop. Atleast that is what the media leads us to believe but in Persepolis the family and girl being told about are not religious at all. We a ll need to do our research before we open our mouths.

  16. It changes our views tremendously because before this book (I read Persepolis) I honestly just grouped all of Iran/Persia together because of media and because I simply didn't know. Now that I feel I can hear what she is saying I have opened my eyes to a completely different territory that I didn't know before, and now I can understand why they are always in war, and why a lot of Islamic people come to our country because it’s there or almost death. Now I know that you can't judge without knowing the entire story, and being blissfully ignorant isn't the answer.

  17. Their inside perspective is very important because it gives spectators something to think about. We all as americans would have never thought to research or have even cared about the things going on in Iran, so Marjane's perspective should have us amazed in whats going on. Inside information is important to share because it gives the outsiders a chance to think or view whats really going on in the perspective by the insider. its also important because your sharing new information for bpeople to research or take seriois us about.

  18. There inside perspectives can show us what they are really going through. Cause us on the outside looking in dont really know for sure cause we haven't been in the situation. We cant judge the things they do cause we arent walking in their shoes. Although You just have to know thats how the world works. People come from all over the world fromdifferent regions, races and religioun. So no one will have the same view about a certain topic cause we all have our own special way about ourselves. People who are insiders have to understand that the outsiders dont understand their situations so they might say things that might come off as rude or are rude. This insider info is important for us to recieve so we can understand where people are coming from so we wont say insentsive things to tem thats could hurt their feeling. Insiders expressing their feels helps brings everyone closer.

  19. Good point Cory we should get insight from the people who live in what you are judging. " He who is without sin shall cast the first stone".

  20. Insiders information is important to share with outsiders because then outsiders will then recieve real information that they can then share truthfully based on the facts that they recieved. Insiders changes our views by mentally giving us feelings and thoughts on how hard or easy something is. That's why they say if you really want to kno something it's best to ask someone who already done it or went through it

  21. With True Writers it helps me remember that the inmates are still human. Yes they may have committed a crime but who are we to judge them and make them believe they are less important than anyone in the outside world. They will forever have the title as a "criminal" so why treat them like dirt when the system have tried to bring them down to their low. Without knowing the insider information we will always make assumptions and prejudge people in prison. Everyone in jail may not have committed the crime but without knowing their story that bad image will always be the first thing that comes to mind.

  22. @ Sir Pirate Codith I completly agree with the fact that the ignorance of a person is key to why we don't know what is going on in our world and many ppl don't want to look into it, so for many its way easier to judge than to educate themselves on whats actually going on.
