Welcome New Bridge Students

Our class blog, http://pamandddolly.blogspot.com/, is a collaborative space where you will discuss and exchange ideas with your instructors and peers. Rather than being the sole author of a collection of writing, the blog will be a group effort allowing each student to write original ideas and responses to classmate comments. The goal of this blog is to provide a space in which we can reflect and evolve ideas each individual contributes.

Each day two to three students will design a question to pose for the class (you will pick your own dates based on the syllabus). The next class day we will spend 45 minutes responding to those questions. Please make an effort to write thoughful and reflective responses and spend the entire 45 minutes writing. Always try to explore the ideas behind the question rather than try to find the right answer.

This class has control over this blog, which means in the end the result and what you learn or don't learn from it rests on your shoulders. With this is mind, we encourage you to be creative and thoughtful. But be mindful of its relevance to the questions and repsonses; we do not need post after post of political rants or break up stories. Please remember to always remain repsectful, to be open to new ideas, and to use your words to clearly explain your point rather than using bold, upper case letters and exaggerated profanity.

Finally, you are encouraged to use quotes from the books, to use your own experiences, to share what you have discussed at salons, museum visits, and lectures. This is our space to reflect on and openly explore themes from Bridge as they relate to our lives and the world around us. We will use this space to question, share our inquiries and insights, and post our most sincere thoughts about the reading and as we progress through the next four weeks together.

The bridge has helped prepare me alot. It has refreshined my mathmatical and reading/writing skills. Some skills that ive acquired are how to write better papers and elaborate more in my papers.

  3. To become the best college student I can be I will need to be responsible hardworking and determined. I will have to be well organized so I will be able to finish and deliver my assignmets on time. I will have to strive to make it to class everyday and on time. This summer bridge program really prepares me for the fall semsester. I am learning to be on time everyday. Due to the summer bridge's no tolerance for absenses and tardies this is helping me gain this skill of being on time. I am also learning to pay more attention in my classes and express myself more in my writing and in group discussion. The summer bridge will make or break you and show you if you are ready for college or not. I'm ready for college and this programs has shown me just that.

  4. The bridge is preparing me greatly! When I found out I had to attend bridge..i was upset...but now, I'm so glad that I had the oppurtunity to get to know the campus and people before actually stepping into college. And, the classes are so college preparing that i'm glad to be here for that. The bridge program is discipling us for college which is GREAT! because now I know how important it is to mature and toughin up for the college process.

  6. You have to stay on top of your work and create an schedule that will work for you to become a successful college student. Brige is preparing me tremendoulsy because I am learning how to juggle my baby and school once I have that mastered I can hopefully and eventually get a job so I can reach my full-time mother duties. So I can say bridge is helping me take control of things I have coming up in the next four years of life. I believe I am ready for it and I have my solid support system to help me finish and get through it very successfully :-).

  7. To become an attentive college student you have to be able to handle responsibilities. We each are reponsible for our own decisions and the consequences that comes along. You have to want it basically. You will have to have the drive and will power to gain the true qualities of an attentive. In life you only get what you put out. Meaning that if you are slacking and doig the complete opposite of a aot sudent than most likely you will get results that you may not be pleased it. The brigdge prepare me for my up coming college year. The rules and guidelines are specifically placed in order so that each individual student learn and prepare for whats ahead. The skill I am aquiring as of now is really focusing on how what I do and say affects how my readers view me.

  8. I think I need to write down my assignments so that I can reemember everything I need to do! I know it's kind of lame but it is very important to write assignments down. It barely go through college! The Bridge Program is preparing me because I need discipline in my life. In high school I was thee biggest class clown you had to offer! Coming here let me know I couldn't do that anymore and I needed to buckle down. I'm only here for me. My parents expect more and so do I. I am acquiring SELF discipline just from being motivated by teachers. I am developing a sense of punctuality, and much better focus. Peace out! :)

  9. I need to get comfortable with with doing school work again and staying productive. Summer always throws you into lazy mode and the transition back into school is usually really tough. The Bridge Program is prpeparing me for a college level education. It is helping me get back into going to class and getting my work done. I see the bridge as a big advantage for us students. We are going to be in school a whole month earlier than the other freshmen. By the time they all arrive we will be comfortable with the city and school and staying productive. I am aquiring skill in the bridge that I am not used to but I am really enjoying it. We do a lot of group discussion which I like because I enjoy hearing what other people have to say as well as putting my input on the topic. Group discussions are a great way to get information that you might have missed or not completely understood. We are writing a lot of papers which I am not used to. I enjoy writing though so it isn't a big deal to me. The Bridge is a great program and I think it should be offered to all students who want to attend Columbia> It is a very helpful tool for our learning process.

  10. It is preparing us for columbia, by making sure we get to class that we get the work done and are learning how to be dependent on ourselves things i need to be ready for the college year is just to get my work done and hopefully a day before its due and make sure its the best possible work i can do and not just get by to actually strive to have A's and B's and not just C's or D's. The bridge is being tough yet fair and it leaves no room for mistakes which is a wake up call for most and is need to make you a better student It's also helping me in the fact that math is teaching me new math skills i have never been taught in all of my life and the english department is helping me by showing me how to write and make the what i say meaningful and has shown that not all books you read in college have to be a boring novel but can also be an informative exciting graphic novel. It also teaches you that the teachers and staff are your friends and you can ask them for help with just about anything and they will bend over backwards just to help you. This is the kind of program I needed and the kind of college i also need.

  11. I need to just work hard and pay attention in class so I can do good. Bridge is preparing me by getting me ready for the semester of Columbia. Since I've been on summer vacation since May, I got used to not going to school. The Bridge program gets me warmed up for the semester so I can be ready. I won't be lazy in class and I will do my homework on time. I need to get my mentality right and focus mainly on school. I ask the teacher questions for things that I don't understand. I won't continue to put school work aside and then do it at the last minute like I did in high school. I will have my mind set on passing all my classes with very high grades. I plan on making a change in college. I look foward to the beginning of the school year. Bridge is getting my mind set on school after months of having fun. Bridge is like preseason in sports because it gets you ready for the most important time. I plan on passing all my Bridge classes with B's AT LEAST. I'm currently enjoying the Bridge program. I feel that I'm ready for Columbia College. I will be the best student I can be.

  12. I think to become a better student you need focus, and you need to be able to work hard. without focus you cant study, you cant do your work right.working hard is just another way to make you a better student giving 100 percent in class and doing everything you have to do to get good grades. The bridge program is preparing me very well, just going over the basics in math, reading, and writing can go along way.Bushing up on these things can also help me become a better worker in class and is preparing me for my first semester in college.

  13. The Bridge is preparing me to go further into the College. Its an excellent program with excellent staff. Im starting to really get familiar with my surrounding and the campus area. The classes that i was assigned to are preparing me to better opportunities. The most im getting out of this program is helping my wrtiting skills whcih i love to learn more about everyday just because of this class im taking. This skills im aquiring are my writing/literature. I hope to learn more....

  14. I NEED TO STAY FOCUSED, ASK QUESTIONS WHEN IM NOT UNDERSTANDING, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY ATTENDING ALL CLASSES.BRIDGE IS PREPARING ME TO BE MORE RESPONSIBLE AND COLLEGE READY BY TEACHING US WRITING AND MATH. HAVING HOMEWORK AND BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR SHOWING UP TO EACH CLASS ON TIME. THE SKILLS THAT I AM ACQUIRING ARE: BEING A BETTER WRITER, LEARNING MORE ABOUT MATH AND HOW TO SOLVE THE MATH PROBLEMS, AND TO ALSO WORK HARD FOR WHAT I WANT.

  15. What i need to become a apt/attentive college student is alot of ENERGY drinks/COFFEE in the morning and a good breakfast. I also need my head in the game and ready to do all the work i need to do in college. I need to stay focus and not mess up my time trying become a Columbia student. Bridge is preparing me and others by giving us homework(always due the nest day)and explaining what we need to do to stay on task. They also help us out on things we don't understand like our homework, classwork or even class room discussions. They get us prepare for college and see if we are ready for college in september. They want us to be ready to what's in store for us during our time in Columbia. I'm acquiring math skills and also writing skills. It'll take time for me to gain more learning in those skills, but i'll do it. Even if it gets to hard for me i won't give up, i'll just try even harder to understand.

  16. additionally, I have to say the bridge is AWESOME! and have shown me the steps I need to take to be ready for college this fall..

  17. We shouldn't take the Bridge forgranted. It has a lot to offer us as students to help us develop the college ready attitude that is expected from Columbia. They really want to help us but first we have to want to help ourselves.

  18. This isn't over!!! I'm still posting! I love the Bridge program because it's kind of a challenge. I want to come into the year at Columbia College working hard as nails and Bridge is instilling that foundation within me.

  21. id also like to add that the TEACHERS in the bride program are also helping me prepare alot by getting everyones perspective on ideas instead of just telling us what they think. Which helps me see other peoples point of views.

  22. @ Ariel_2014 I completely agree with the fact of being upset about bridge but the experience that I'm getting is priceless and will make that much easier when the fall semester comes around

  23. I think i need to stay driven so i wont become lazy as i have in the past with my education. The bridge program prepares me by giving me the advantage to get the feel of college before it arrives. The program is strict so it reallly helps me because if i dont come to class on time or miss an assignment i can be easily dropped which makes me just work harder. The skills that i have acquired are paying attention so that i understand the work and come to class before its time to start.

  26. i also would like to add that the bridge is a excellent way of improving absences. The bridge program is very hard on absences. No matter if your 3 minutes late(sarcastic), they are eligible to let you go. We all should have read the paper. The students know what time class starts. And if you want it that bad you will come way before class start. I barely knew my way around this city, but i still manage to wake up two hours early than i need to just to make sure that i walk in class on time. If you are determined to be here, you will be on time, focused, and ready to work

  40. @vicki I knew writing was a process but I never liked writing so I never took the time of for the process in h.s. because you had to write what they wanted you to write and I didnt get the right feel for it but here to me its completely different in a good way... you know?

  41. The main thing I feel you need to become an attentive student is a goal. With a goal and determination it will help you focus on school. My eye should always be on the prize at the end of my college journey. Graduation and my future should always be on my mind as I attend classes. Bridge is preparing us for what is to come for our fall semester. It may not be the work load of an average semester but we get a taste of the college school day. I am getting better at my writing. During my high school years I never got into writing. I would always wait until the last minute to complete a paper. Pam made a good point about writing your paper ahead of time "letting it sit" then coming back. This takes your mind off the paper and the pressure to make it perfect the first time. Also I have learned that there is a process to writing papers. Sitting down and thinking about what you want to say can help you in the long run instead of writing, typing, then printing.

  42. The writing process that i learned about was very helpful and relevent for me to learn because i am also a young writer.

  43. I see that you all get that you are responsible for your own destiny. That being said, you know that being organized, punctual, focused, and determined will take you a long way towards success. Carefully preparing assignments and be prepared for class are obvious keys for succeeding. We all like to take interesting, compelling courses, but have you considered what you will do if/when you find yourselves in courses that you have to struggle to be motivated in? You still have to pass those courses as well.
