Welcome New Bridge Students

Our class blog, http://pamandddolly.blogspot.com/, is a collaborative space where you will discuss and exchange ideas with your instructors and peers. Rather than being the sole author of a collection of writing, the blog will be a group effort allowing each student to write original ideas and responses to classmate comments. The goal of this blog is to provide a space in which we can reflect and evolve ideas each individual contributes.

Each day two to three students will design a question to pose for the class (you will pick your own dates based on the syllabus). The next class day we will spend 45 minutes responding to those questions. Please make an effort to write thoughful and reflective responses and spend the entire 45 minutes writing. Always try to explore the ideas behind the question rather than try to find the right answer.

This class has control over this blog, which means in the end the result and what you learn or don't learn from it rests on your shoulders. With this is mind, we encourage you to be creative and thoughtful. But be mindful of its relevance to the questions and repsonses; we do not need post after post of political rants or break up stories. Please remember to always remain repsectful, to be open to new ideas, and to use your words to clearly explain your point rather than using bold, upper case letters and exaggerated profanity.

Finally, you are encouraged to use quotes from the books, to use your own experiences, to share what you have discussed at salons, museum visits, and lectures. This is our space to reflect on and openly explore themes from Bridge as they relate to our lives and the world around us. We will use this space to question, share our inquiries and insights, and post our most sincere thoughts about the reading and as we progress through the next four weeks together.

  1. Mark is a dreamer. He believes the world can be perfect even though he knows it's impossible. Mark being an author sees the writings of these juveniles and becomes inspired, all he sees are kids with potential disregarding the wrong they've done. This comes down to the big question, should people ever be truly forgiven for their intense faults or crimes? Like Mark I'd rather see the good in people but it gets harder everyday. All we can do as people is play our role and hope for the fulfillment we seek is enough to change our surroundings. My life experiences made me who I am but for the worst I believe. I don't want to express my life so I'll end it like this.

  2. Mark views life as something that is fun of wonders. Mark's views compare to me because I believe that people can fix mistakes and change. My experiences has had a big impact on who I am today. For example my bad experiences with relationships has caused me to stay single for a very long time to avoid seeing the same results. I've also learned how to stop telling "friends" what I do because some of them become jealous and try to copy me. I've learned from all my mistakes in life. It has molded me into a mysterious man. People can only get to know me when they decide to talk to me. I wish that I could go back and change a lot of things but I can't. I believe that everything was meant to happen to teach me and prepare me for the future. I can only thank all the bad people who came into my life because they taught me valuable lessons. Those lessons made me how I am today.

  4. Marjane Views life as a place where you have to work hard to accomplish what you want. Even when times are becoming tough you have to stick to it to acomplish your goals. She know that aint nothing gonna be handed to you in this world you have to go after it. She feels that life is not right yet and she needs to make a change to it.

Marjanes's culture makes her a sweet person. She wants to help everyone and make a change in the world. She wants to help people if they are in tough situations and she wants to help people even when she doesnt have the capabilites to do so.

Her views of life compare to mine because we both share a view of life as being what you make it. You have to go get what you want its not for certain that it will come to your front door. I feel I can make a signifacant change in this world just like marjane.

My experiences made me a tough person who takes rejection at times and keep trying to pursue my dreams. I know that are several people who are going for the same goal im going for. This doesnt intimiated me it motivates me. Im ready to take life head on and pursue my dreams and give it all I got.

  5. Mark views his life as giving chances and he's very open minded, because he's allowing these "criminals" to speak their minds, through writing. His life compares to mine in way, because we both believe in helping and that writing is very important. Mark has had bad experiences with criminals but it has not stopped him from getting to know actual criminals. Past experiences such as being picked on, talked about, and decieved so many times, has made me feel as if i was unable to trust my peers and open up to them, but at the same time it has made me a stronger person because i already know what to expect though I proceed with caution, kind of like how mark was with the crimainals.

  6. Marjane views life like an adult. She sees the world how she wants, and she is very observant with her surroundings. Her culture affects her life because she is in a place where people have no control, and no freedom of expression. Basically, everything that we love, like fashion, music, fancy shoes, is prohibited there. It affects her personality because it makes her even more rebellious, and it keeps her breaking the law, by going out into public with her Nike shoes and her veils not worn correctly. Marjane views compare to mines because she is very mature and she pays attention to everything going on around her like me, she’s the type of person that doesn’t like to be talked down upon just like me. She also dislikes being told what to do and how not to express herself, I hate when people talk to me like I’m stupid and illiterate. Im the person to speak my mind and tell you the truth no matter what, I believe that her and I are very much alike, the things she we through, me and her problems may be different, but they are on the same border line. The experiences in my life made me who I am today because I am strong and I can handle more than I ever thought. After my mother had brain surgery, I thought life would be hectic, even though it was, her being paralyzed on one side at the time, it was hard to even function in school, then things got even worse when my father passed 1 year later, then I thought life was really over. I am pretty tough, I don’t take a lot of mess, I keep very little friends, and I try my best to be friendly because naturally I am not friendly at all! My job made me friendly, the first job I ever had back in March at The Home depot. I believe that if bad things didn’t happen I would be happy and satisfied, but bad things will always happen, we need to think realistic, that’s why we live, we live to die, and we live to go through a bunch of obstacles to make it to where we want to be.

  7. Mark views life as a big o'notebook. He writes all his emotions and thoughts in his notebook. He decides to let people in on what he does to let everything out his mind. He taught his students(inmates)to not always keep all your thoughts and emotions bunch in your mind, but to write them down and express them to the other inmates. Because keeping them in your thoughts isn't good for your mind or heatlth. It'll just keep making you think the same think which can get you depressed or suicidal.

Well Mark doesn't really have a culture belief because he doesnt believe in God, but he is open-minded to others. Like when I believe Kevin was thinking that there wasn't a God, and ask Mark if he did. Well, he said he didn't but he does believe in the inmates making a difference, and he wanted to hear more about what Kevin had to say. He wants his personality to affect his students so they can make a change in life. So that they won't think that they aren't anything, when really they are someone in this world.

There life views(Mark) are compare to my by there thoughts that they think. He wanted to help them with their problems and life changing experience that cause them to be locked up.I want to help others in any way i can. I am the type of person that will just sit down and listen to all your problems. If i could i would love to help others like others help me more. I would love to change someones life like Mark is changing his students life, just by giving them hope.

My experience in life changed me by making me who I am today. I lost a bestfriend and through the years i had to recover from my friend just leaving me behind and forgetting about me all, because of a guy. I couldn't trust anyone after that, but i thank her now only, because she made me realize who my friends were really my friends. She made me stronger and being able to speak to more people and through those years i gain a true friend named Joel. That was one of the experience that changed my life so much and made me who I am today.

  8. Marjane is a very adventurous character. She seizes the day and now that she is older she seems like she will try anything once. Even though she tries a lot of things, her morals and values continue to kick in. It seems like the only way she stays on track. Her family and her environment taught her very well. Based off of the reading, the Iranians are strict people but Sapatri family always a positive message. In everything she does, whether it be a mistake or a triumph, you can trace it back to something a family member of hers told her. The only thing I can think of that could compare Marjane to myself is the words of wisdom I recieve from the people around me like just as her family gave her. I used to hear a lot of cliches in my house. Every mistake I make someone I know has made the same mistake before. I was raised in a bad neighborhood and some of the negative things I've seen made me a positive man. The people in my neighborhood that were doing things they weren't proud of made sure I wasn't doing the same things. I can better decifer right and wrong because of the path laid before me.

  9. Marjane views life very opened mindedly. I say that Marjane is open minded because she is a very exploratory and couragous person. She is couragous to me for going to the protest at the age of like ten when she knew that it was not safe and that her parents would not allow her to go. She has plenty faith in anything that she believes in. Like I said before, she reminds me of myself in a way. By her being naive at first but finding out that the media covers up what really happens, then researching to find information on the islamic revolution. Her culture affects her life vitally because i think that if Marjane grew up in america she would be a individual that stands out. In Iran you cant express yourself through clothing really, and people die for expressing certain beliefs. Her life views are similiar to mine even though we see life through two totally different perspectives. Our views are similiar because I feel like everyone should be treated equally also, and im always curious to find out more information on something that I am not sure of. My experiences in life made me who I am today because i feel that if certain things had not happend in my life, I would be a totally different person. Like if i grew up without i father i would probally lack certain morals, and my views on respect would probally be different.

  10. Marjane's view on life is much more complicated and different from our lives. We have the luxury on living in a free country that pretty much accepts everything, even if people from this country don't except our differences it is allowed, so we can live as free as we want. When Marjane has to hide things that are meant to be enjoyed, she can't listen to certain music, she has to wear her clothes a certain way, and so on and so forth. So that is how her culture affects her life every day. I can't compare to her because if I want to wear shorts with a halter or wear a dress or a jogging suit I can when she has to wear a veil over everything or a black dress that shows nothing of her body and that's not fair to Marjane or the people of her country.

The experiences that I've had in my life definitely make me the person I am today in many ways. In high school alone I feel like I have found myself and feel I am very true to myself. I feel that is one way that I can connect with Marjane because she found herself and stayed true to herself as she grew-up. My experiences, which I would rather keep to myself, have made me the strong girl/women I am today. I know have a lot of learning to do but I feel like I'm on the right path and without my experiences I feel I would not be on this path or as clear-minded as I am today.

  11. to add to my post she also is a rebellious at the same times. She wants to take matters in her own hands to make a change.I also take matters in my own hands and I express myself in the way I want to even if people don't agree.

  12. Mark views his life as an realist, a person who accepts the world as it is. He believes he can help the inmates through there stuggle by putting there mind on other things, like showing them how to become great writers.he believes that everyone deserves a chance and change there lives if they work hard.Marks culture affects his personality because of his background he was never exposed to the "streets" or to gangs, he went into helping the inmates write with many diffrent steriotypes and didnt believe that that would succeed in being good writers. When mark got to know the inmates as people he began to understand that deep down they were good boys. The inmates life compared to mine, well they dont really have a life because they are behind gates and dont they have freedom. My life is anything i can make it, but the inmates have to wait for there time to show society what type of people they are.

  13. mark is a guy who thinks of the world as a place where he can make a change. Mark's culture affect's his life and personality because, its what helps him see the world the way he does, and gives him his motives. His life views compare to mine, because I also see the world as a place I too can make a change, because I believe at one point in life everyone make a bad choice or decision, and in some cases it isn't fair to be pinished for it for life. I have made mistakes, for example, I got pregnant as a teenager, I wouldn't call my son a mistake but I wish I would've waited..but he's here now and i have no choice but to take on my responsibility, and succeed in getting educated to set the bar high for my son. He's who made me who I am today.. and I'm glad because with out him, I dont believe I would've come this far

  14. "Like I said before, she reminds me of myself in a way. By her being naive at first but finding out that the media covers up what really happens, then researching to find information on the islamic revolution" to suport my previous comment on how me and Marjane are similiar. When Marjane stated that on the television 99.99% voted for the islamic republic is when she was naive. After that is when her father explained what was really going on, then she found out the truth

  15. Marjane views life as having to overcome obstacles. She is not in the best circumstances in her life so she tries to help however she can to make life better for her and her country. Her culture affects her life because of the struggle the culture goes through and the obstacles she has encountered. It leaves her damaged emotionally.

Marjane views compares to mine because she tries to stay close to god which is what i try to do as well. Another comparison is her way of seeing things not trusting those who are in charge and those who set the laws. I Believe that all people should be equally treated and not differently.

The experiences in my life made me more of a religious minded person because of most of the evil that i've seen in this world. It makes me look at this world as deceitful because of the things that they keep secret and how important those things are and how they need to be reached out for everyone to know.

  16. Mark point of view on life comes from events that have occured in his life. He creates as list on why he shouldnt do certain things and the reasons why. From this you can get that Mark believes that the world is a very dangerous place and once a person commits a crime they will always be a bad person with no second chance or thought about it given. Their culture affect their lives and personalities just like anyone elses does. You learn from you surronding and gain a certain mind setting based on what you are introdue to everyday. It controls how you interact positively and negatively to the world. Mark views relates to me because around my enviroment we have alot of young men that engages in so much gang violence that I have gained a mind setting that everytime I see young men when baggy clothing and in large groups I automatically think they are involved in gang activity. My experiences in life makes me who i am because i learned from each and every one. I exeprience how to take the good with the bad and to continue on with life because regardless of how i feel about a certain situation life moves on and i believe thats one quality that i gained from all my experience thats makes me such a strong individual.

  17. Marjane's view on life is a rollercoaster, its ever changing it seems to go up and down. It seems that one moment she will be happy with life and the next it will change to loathing life. Examples are when she met up with her uncle Anoosh her life seemed great, but then her uncle was taking away by the government and killed and her whole life even religious beliefs fell apart on her. There was also the time when her boyfriend Markus cheated on her and she got kicked out of her home and lived on the street and got really sick. She moved home and was pretending to be happy but deep down felt nothing, till one day she decides to commit suicide. Having almost died from her overdosing on medication she changes her life around. Her culture also has done a number on her views the culture she grew up in was always oppressing women and keeping them down not allowing free expression. This at times did make Marjane sad and view life negativly. But she bounced back from it with a new found hope each time and believed things would chnage for her and get better.

As for how this compares to my life view, I'm always hoping for things will change and get better in this world. I have a postive view on life. Things do get me down but I don't let it slow me down and I push through it and become a better person, at least i hope i do. I have been through many relationships that i learned what to do and not to do. My father and my best friend Tom were both very outgoing people that because of them I've become a social butterfly and find it very easy to talk to people. My parents let me do alot of things and gave me freedoms that most kids didn't have and I learned lessons about abusing my privileges. I also learned good morals from my parents and because of it i respect elders. all of these things make up my beliefs and views.

  18. And, to add to my post, its not fair to be held to a mistake for life, because as a child, you're so immature, that you barely realize the things you do, and when you learn from it, the judicial system, doesn't fairly give everyone another chance at life.

  19. Marjane's view on life is constantly being altered by occurrences in her everyday life. She is growing up in a time of war which is changing the way she must live every day. She is open-minded and believes that everyone is equal. She takes interest in the problems that prevail due to the conflicts her country is facing. She always wants to find a way that she can help her people get through their struggles; Not only her country but her family and herself too. She thinks she understands a lot of things, but soon after discovering what she believes is the truth, she is told differently. This twists her mind and it becomes hard for her to perceive the information under her nose. Growing up in a time of conflict would be extremely difficult for a ten year old girl; especially in a revolutionary Iran where the women are thought as incompetent and worthless. Not to mention the new standards of life everyone is expected to follow. Growing up at this time has molded Marjane into what we see in the book. She has learned from the war and the ruling of the Shah; Life lessons that will carry with her the rest of her life. I have learned important life lessons in the short amount of time I have been here. I have never experienced anything near Marjane's predicament, but I have had my own life altering experiences.
We have been growing up in a time of war. Nothing negative has directly affected our homeland but we are still at war; for a pointless reason in my opinion. Personally, the war has but has not affected me. I do not any part of it has changed my life like it has Marjane's. Emotionally it just angers me. I wish we did not have to have wars, but like Kurt Vonnegut once said, "Writing an anti-war book is pointless. You might as well write an anti-glacier book instead. There always has been war and there always will be. Even if there was not war there would still be plain old death." War does affect us as Americans. I think everyone should be up to date on why we are fighting, even if there is no point in it.
Life itself has made me what I am today. I cannot just pick one occurrence that has made me what I am today. It is a medley of many points in my life that taught me new things and discarded old ones. Life is a building block that you have to add new things to in order to achieve a high point in life. Maturing as a person involves taking on responsibility and exploring different aspects that will further your knowledge of the world around you

  21. 1. Since Mark began the sessions with the boys he has had a different view on life. Mark once thought that all criminals were the same, “once a criminal always a criminal.” He believed this since so many crimes had happened to him. Thefts and burglaries will have its effects on a person. It brings fear. When he first entered the program he did not know what to think. Even though he had seen how Duane’s group acted, he was unsure about the boys and their behavior. It was a little rough at first but things got better. He then realized that it only takes one person to make a change in a person's life. The boys look up to him and I believe that since he took this step he will no longer view criminals the same.
    2. Mark did not grow up in a "bad" neighborhood so stepping into the detention center was a different environment. I can say that not once have I got the impression that he thought he was better than the inmates by reading the text. He always tried to relate to the boys even if he had never been through a similar situation.
    3. I cannot compare myself to Mark. He has done something that I thought about doing but backed out of.
    4. Through my trials and tribulations I have always kept a positive attitude and my sprits high.

  22. Mark believes that people should be given second chances and he's very open minded, because he's allowing these "criminals" to speak their minds, through writing and he also decided to get to know them for who they were.

His life compares to mine in a way, because we both believe in helping others and that writing is very important, because it allwows us people to express themselves without coming face to face with people.
