Welcome New Bridge Students

Our class blog, http://pamandddolly.blogspot.com/, is a collaborative space where you will discuss and exchange ideas with your instructors and peers. Rather than being the sole author of a collection of writing, the blog will be a group effort allowing each student to write original ideas and responses to classmate comments. The goal of this blog is to provide a space in which we can reflect and evolve ideas each individual contributes.

Each day two to three students will design a question to pose for the class (you will pick your own dates based on the syllabus). The next class day we will spend 45 minutes responding to those questions. Please make an effort to write thoughful and reflective responses and spend the entire 45 minutes writing. Always try to explore the ideas behind the question rather than try to find the right answer.

This class has control over this blog, which means in the end the result and what you learn or don't learn from it rests on your shoulders. With this is mind, we encourage you to be creative and thoughtful. But be mindful of its relevance to the questions and repsonses; we do not need post after post of political rants or break up stories. Please remember to always remain repsectful, to be open to new ideas, and to use your words to clearly explain your point rather than using bold, upper case letters and exaggerated profanity.

Finally, you are encouraged to use quotes from the books, to use your own experiences, to share what you have discussed at salons, museum visits, and lectures. This is our space to reflect on and openly explore themes from Bridge as they relate to our lives and the world around us. We will use this space to question, share our inquiries and insights, and post our most sincere thoughts about the reading and as we progress through the next four weeks together.

Heroes of the Books

1.In Persepolis, how does Marjane view Anoosh as her hero? Do you agree or disagree with her belief of Anoosh as a hero and why?
Or
In True Notebooks, Mark is seen as a hero to the juvenile inmates. Describe how Mark has impacted one of the inmates lives. Explain what made him a hero in their eyes.

2. Who is your hero and why is this person your hero? What have they done to become your hero?

Be sure to answer part one and two thoroughly.

  1. In my opinion Francisco was affected the most by Mark, he gave him a reason to belive in himself. Francisco has his emotions on his sleeves and shows his care towards Mark in chapter 16, Happy Birthday. When Mark tells them about his book not being published Francisco goes on a rage of anger towards his editor. Mark knowing how to get the truth from the kids on paper has given them a clue of who they really are. Who wouldn't appreciate someone like that?
Unfortunately my hero is Kanye West, simply because he's living life how he wants to and doesn't care what people think of him. He speaks his mind and isn't afraid to be different in the eyes of others.

  2. Marjane views her uncle Anoosh as a her hero because he has been through the most in her family in her opinion. He is idoled by her becuase of his rebellious attitude. Like when he was young and he left his family to live with his uncle that shared the same beliefs as him. I dont really have a hero personally. I have never really found someone i would say i looked up to. There are people who showed me things that would definately qualify as my hero. Like my brother. But i feel like i look up to myself because there is no one in this world i wanna be like besides Joe.`

  3. Mark had imapcted all of his student inmates by showing them that they can be so much better than who they are now. He gives them support and tells them that they are someone in life. Mark is there to guide them and help them while they are in prison. He was made a hero in there eyes just by being there for them, and showing that he cares about how they feeel and think. That is how Mark shows that he is a hero in there eyes.

I would have to say my mother is my hero. Only because my mother has never doubted me on my dreams. She has been there for me and has never left my side. My mom has been there to talk to when no one else would listen. She has been there for guidience and for love. She has push me to become who I am today and where I'm at today also. Not once has she told me that I couldn't do it. One thing she always told me was "Don't you ever give up, and one day you'll become what you have been dreaming since you where a baby." My mother is my mom, my guardian angel who save my from being lost, my words when i couldn't speak, my hug when i shed a tear, my hero who save my from falling off a cliff and last but not lease my bestfriend of all time.

  4. Everyone has a hero in their life or in other words a person who they consider to be their role model. In "True Notebooks" Mark impacts the lives of his student inmates by encouraging them to write and letting them know that they are more than what they seem to be. The one inmate I think Mark really impacted was kenny. Kenny was an inmate who recieved life in prison even though the income was bad the impact was mentally. He showed Kenny that there is still someone there to for you. Kenny thought that he was alone and that every negative thing that was ever told to him was true. Mark helped Kenny understand that many make mistakes and with mistakes comes consequences but its learning from your mistakes that make you the wonderful person you are. My mother is my hero. To me i see her carry the whole world on her back and never give up. She makes she me n my siblings are taken care of before she worry about herself she put our needs before hers. She stay strong through all the down falls that comes as a parent she smiles through the pain. For that i appreciate every single thing she does and for that she is my hero.

  5. Marjane views her uncle as a hero because of his courageous activity during the revolution. When she was young, she had an infatuation with people who had been through extreme hardships. Anyone who had been to jail for something they believed in, she go to school and gloat about what they had been through.

I've got myself a hero. He is the best producer of all time. His name is Pharrell Williams. My heroes are N.E.R.D, Lupe Fiasco, and Kanye. I've seen these these guys catch media hell and take it like champions. They make music regardless of what people may say they like. It's all about the love of music with them and no one can change the way they are.

  6. In Persepolis Anoosh is Marjane's hero because he fought for his rights all his life just like Marjane has all her life. He fled the country came back went to jail and list goes on and on of things he did for his freedom in that country. He was a hero in her eyes because she mimicked him and didn't know it until he told his stories to her and I agree with the fact that he is a hero.

My hero is my mother because she has always helped me through my nonsense and when I'm in a hole. Now she is my hero more than ever because she helps me take care of my baby while I’m in school. She gets my baby’s diapers, clothes, medicines, and shoes. Cares and loves my daughter too, basically she is the father of my baby's life and I fully appreciate my mother for being my hero for me especially when I needed it most.

  7. I agree, she is her own person and has her own thoughts of what a hero should be, and her Uncle Anoosh is the person who fits that character. <y hero would have to be my grandmother. My grandmother is my hero because she loves me for who I am, she is very demanding, but as she had gotten older, she is not as bad as she use to be. She calls and texts me every day to see how school and life is going, she is a hard working business woman, and she financially stepped in after my mom bought a house and the next 2 months after her having her surgery and wasn’t able to work anymore, my grandmother paid our mortgage, and hers. It’s not like my mom didn’t have a job, self employed as a cosmetologist, making 6 figures, but after buying a home it wasn’t her fault that she had a tumor. So my grandmother took and still takes care of everything, you know you can’t be a cosmetologist with only one side of your body working, that’s why my granny is still helping us out, but she is a great mother and grandmother, and almost everybody around me or in my family really respects and looks up to her. Even though I threw a lot in this paragraph, I just wanted to get my point across and say all what’s on my mind in my hero. I love her, she is amazing! Love you granny!!!

  8. Yes Marjane viewed Anoosh as her hero. She respected how he was strong and he fought for what he believed in. He went to prison and was toutured but this didnt stop his beliefs. Marjane admired his strength and determination. I agree with her beliefs cause who doesn't like a strong hero? Who wants their hero to be weak? I agree that annosh is a good hero.

My hero is my older brother Jeremiah. He really looks out for me when I am in need like a hero should. Even if it comes down to just some words of encouragement or giving me some cash he does it. He the type of person who wants to help out. You know when their people who help dont want to, my brother is the complete opposite. He helps me out with life situations cause he already been through them and shares his advice and info with me. He truly looks out for me and this why I consider my big bro to be my hero.

  9. Mark is a hero to the inmates because he showed them that their voice is heard and that their opinions count. He was the only person who showed interest in them and listened to what they had to say after they got locked up. Mark made the inamtes feel special about themselves and gave them something that is important to them and mean a lot to them. Since they're locked up, they have nothing else but the writing class. Since Mark decides to continue to come, it gives the inmates a chance to escape the negativity.

My hero is Kobe Bryant. He is currently the best basketball player in the world and is on the verge of becoming the greatest in history after Michael Jordan. He is my hero because he loves doing what he do and he does it like the best. I like that because I love music and I feel like I do it like one of the best. Kobe also never gives up no matter how far something might seem out of reach. He tries his best every game. He becomes aa monster during playoff time when it counts the most. He plays harder than anybody else in the NBA. When everything is on the line, then he step up and take charge. He is a great leader as well as a great teammate. I feel like I'm the Kobe Bryant of hip-hop because I have that same animal instinct in music and I love what I do.

  10. Uncle Anoosh was a man who wanted change. He was strong in what he believed, enough that he was kicked out of his own home by his father for it. When he was banished by his father he sought refuge under his uncle Fereydoon. Anoosh admired his uncle's fight against the religious leaders. He wanted to liberate all of the providences in Iran. Anoosh stood by his side until the day he was arrested. Anoosh fled to the USSR to avoid confrontation with the Shah's army. Anoosh was arrested for affairs with Fereydoon and sentenced to nine years.
Marjane heard so many stories of men who had been imprisoned and the horrible stories of torture these men endured. Marjane saw these men as heroes for standing undergoing these terrible things and still coming out strong and nearly unaffected. When Marjane discovered Anoosh had been imprisoned she immediately clung to him. Her father had never been to prison so he was no hero to her. Anoosh, however, was everything she wanted to be. It was not until his death that his real appearance as a Russian spy is revealed. Marjane admired her uncle for what he was and saw him as a real hero.
My hero... I cannot really say. It is certainly not any of my family, or a religious figure. If I had to pick a hero in my life it would come down to several. Musicians are my heroes. Everything they do inspires me to push my dream forward. They help me on a personal level also. Their music helps me endure hardships because I feel I can relate to what they are singing about or what they are feeling. I don't look up to a lot of things or people but if I had to choose, music would be my hero.

  11. In True NoteBooks, the boys see Mark as their "Hero" because he's taken out alot of time with them and been consistent with spending time with them, and proven how sincere he is by creating a bond with the boys to show them he really cares. This is exactly why they see him as a "Hero" because he's someone who actually cares about them and shows them he does by not treating them as "criminals" or punishing them for the mistakes they've made in the past. He helps them connect with themselves internally and express the things deep within them that no-one else has gave them a chance to do, or never even cared enough to see. Thats why they consider him a "Hero". My Mom's my hero. She's my hero because throughout my whole life she's been nothing but a mother, friend and supporter to me, and through my mis-haps and mistakes, she still manage to love me thru it all. I pride her as my hero because, I don't think theres another person in the world who could've set an better example than my mother, or provided and supported me more, and by doing all of this, she've showed me how to be the same mother to my son. THANKS MOMMY :)

  12. Marjane viewed Anoosh as a hero because of the tragedies that he lived through and all of the stories he was sharing with her. She was intrigued by his relious way and also the way he was inprisoned for his misobedients.
I agree that he was a hero because its hard to try to fight and then get away from their government, so what he was going through was a inspiration for Marjane because she has a rebelious mind as well.

I usually dont idolize celebrities but Michael Jordan is a hero to me even if its not about basketball. The way he approches the game is just so dominant and interesting to me and when I was younger i use to watch all of his videos, now i take that same attitude he took in whatever i do. My true hero is Jesus Christ because of all the things that he did and all the risks he took just for mankind, if we had more people lwho cared about everyone like Jesus did we can make a way better world.

  13. Marjane views Anoosh as her shinning light of hope when her friends start talking about their dad's being heroes of the revolution. She had no one; she had talked up her dad as being this amazing hero in the revolution that had his arm chopped off from being tortured. Luckily she could stop lying her parents told her about Anoosh her uncle a true revolutionary. Anoosh was her hero a man that had beat the odds, in a way he had become the very thing she was looking for a hero someone to look up to.

My hero is my father, the one person I miss the most right now. He is the reason for who I am today without him I would be a shy outcast that isolated himself from the real world. He taught me how to be true to myself and don't let anyone change me. My father has protected me when I couldn't fight for myself when kids threw apples at me calling me ugly he came out and made sure those kids knew who the hell they were messing with. I look up to the man because he came from a tough surroundings his mother(my grandma)going a single mother trying to raise them the best she could while his father was always in jail for one crime or another. Still my father had come out of this mess normal and grew into a man I look up to and always will. When everything gets tough he'll be there and that what I love about him.

  14. 1. The reason the inmates look up to mark as a hero is because he took the time out of his life to be their ear to hear. No one had ever taken the time to hear them out and see how they were feeling. He gave them hope that even though they were in a detention center things could change. They did not have to be bad forever. He showed that he cared for all of them. He boosted their confidence and made them feel like life was worth living even though they had committed a crime. He also brought the inmates together. They formed a brotherhood and pushed one another. Throughout their sessions, each individual inmate found out who they really were as people.
    2. My heroes are my mother, father, aunt, and uncle. They have all pushed me to go after my dreams. Anything I dreamed, it could possibly come true. The reason I live is not only for me, but for them. All they want is for me to succeed, and I will make sure that they see my success

  15. Mark is seen as a hero because he has taken his time out to help young bboys epress thmeselves. he has impacted their lives by staying positive, not judging them, and telling them that even though their words are not correct they are still able to write how they felt because the spelling did not matter. They were known as prisoners, which means they were thought to be dumb. Mark has given them a chance to express themselves without being judged or punished. My hero would be my mother, Mariah. She is considered my hero because she's one of the strongest women I have ever met in my life. She smile even though she may be down, she helps out when she's barely able to, and most importantly she believes in me.

  16. Mark is a hero because he shows the inmates how they are great writers and they are good people, he gives each inmate support and show them how they can express themselves though writing. what made him a hero in there eyes, hes shows them that he really cares about what they want to do and really belives that they can succeed when they are released.

my grandfather is my hero, hes always there for everybody.i can call on him for whatever i need, and so does everyone else.Hes a hard worker and is still working, even though hes 60 years old he doesnt let his age stop him. he does alot for me and my family, and i know i can count on him thats why hes my hero
